Art

Janet Carding, Director & CEO of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), announced
today the appointment of Dr. Wen-Chien Cheng as the new Louise Hawley Stone
Chair of East Asian Art effective October 3, 2011. Dr. Cheng will be
responsible for developing a dynamic program of collection-based scholarship
through acquisitions, permanent and temporary exhibits; will participate in
public programs and public outreach; and will undertake an active program of
research leading to publication and presentation of work in peer-reviewed
scholarly outlets.

Dr. Cheng’s museum experience spans nearly a decade, primarily focused in a
research capacity with the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Dr.

Embellished Reality: Indian Painted Photographs

In the modern period, Indian visual forms have often combined past and
present techniques in new hybrid varieties. Indian painted photographs
exemplify this by combining established painting styles with the new
technology of photography. This exhibition brings together 60 works from
the ROM's collection that have been acquired in the last decade but never
before on display. They date from the 1860s, a few decades after the
invention of photography, to the 2000s, well after the introduction of
colour photography.

Koto players, Ai KAJIGANO and Tsugumi YAMAMOTO enjoy their duo concert careers internationally as “TsuguKaji-KOTO” as well as their individual performing activities. The repertoire of “TsuguKaji-KOTO” was built on a solid foundation based in the traditional classics of their 13-stringed instrument and has developed to include enriched contemporary compositions.
