"It is only once it is formulated, named in the presence of the other, that desire appears in the full sense of the term." - Jacques Lacan

How might the understanding of “East Asia” be illuminated by “DESIRE”? Whether as a geographical, historical, and cultural locus, or as a space of fantasy and the imaginary, how is “DESIRE” produced, structured, regulated, and mobilized through various institutions and discursive formations? “DESIRE” is a concept that intersects with and imbricates a range of complex issues: operating on the level of the libidinal, as well as the material economy, it can be understood as lack, a productive force, or a form of affective labour. Nationalism and imperialism, genders and sexualities, aesthetics and consumer culture, the politics of alterity—these axre just a few of many areas particularly significant to the study of East Asia.

Please join us on Saturday, March 13, 2010 as we explore multidisciplinary spaces of desire. Professor Thomas LaMarre has graciously agreed to join us as our keynote speaker.
